An alternative
Many small-scaled local sawmills have ceased their activities over the last few decades. As a consequence, land owners, farmers, contractors and individuals have no place to go anymore for sawing their logs. This leaves them no other option then processing valuable trees into firewood, or selling them for industrial applications. This is a sad thing because many valuable sawing logs are sacrified to lower-end applications whereas they deserve much better. Now there is a better choice available.
Advantages
A mobile sawmill is a very environmentally friendly solution because it makes a lot of transport redundant. The logs are processed on site, the sawn lumber can be carried away with light trucks or vans, which cause no damage to forest paths, soil or vegetation. The machine can handle logs up to 85cm diametre, (± 2,50m circumference), and lengths up to 6,10 metres in standard configuration. With an extention table connected the length increases to 10,50 meter. The average processing capacity is comprised between 1 M3 and 2,5 M3 per hour, depending on the log quality, the species, the required dimensions, the organisation and the available assistance on the sawing site. These figures assume a full working day, for small jobs the productivity will decrease because the setup and fold up of the mill is a fixed amount of non-productive time that will affect the overall productivity.
But the biggest advantage of mobile sawmilling in the endless flexibility, allowing to adjust every cut individually, without being bound to standard dimensions.
Finally, the waste - or better-: the byproduct is a CO²- neutral regrowable energy source, firewood.
